BIG PICTURE VISION

CREATIVE PROCESS

Reflecting on how a creation comes together is an interesting analysis of how I operate.  I’ve noticed that each time I work with a new medium or software, the inspiration and ideas drop in easily. The thumbnails and sketches happen quickly; a frenzy of pencilled scribbles and cockeyed enthusiasm.

Reality hits – how to translate the vision into reality with this uncharted map.  All I have is the language of a newly learned software, or medium, fumbling around layers and effects like a toddler amongst the glassware.  Then there’s the gentle and guiding presence of a teacher who nudges me in the right direction as I’m grasping at the gossamer threads of comprehension and learning.

It starts to land – YES! She takes the reins – YES! And she’s off and galloping towards the finish line but wait...

What the heck is this giant tangle of weirdness that caught her up in knots – is it self-doubt? Self-judgment?  "WTAF is this thing I’m trying to create anyways and what even is the point of any of it. Just who am I trying to impress or prove that I’m worthy or..." (on and on and on ad nauseum = momentary lapse of reason & plentiful doses of self-depreciation) ...

And then she remembers... (yes we switched to third person on purpose because it symbolizes the shift in focus and the surrendering leap in consciousness that it takes to get your head out of the way and just let this thing be born DAG NAB IT). She remembers that she is creating purely for the love of creating something and who cares if anybody likes it anyway.  If she is happy with the outcome that is all that really matters...

Then Voila!  A creation is born and she can sit back and look at it and pick it apart and learn from the experience and see how she can do better next time...and marvel at this thing that glimmers before her eyes.  And she can say “I made that.”

And that is kinda like life.

AI will never have that satisfaction.
